Site- globalized local TV stations
The site should be around the River Thames, because the English coffee house was introduced by the flourished world trade in the river. GM TV, which is one of the local TV stations, is located alongside the river. It could be in competition with my new coffee house as information place, such as the competitions between the present and the future, and between the digital tools and the analog tools for digital technology, so the site in the other side of the river is chosen. The two buildings, which are located opposite each other, will show the interesting comparison.
Main structure
main structure of the new coffee house
The main structure of the coffee house is the aggregator of information flows. From the newspaper to the TV station or internet news, the aggregator, information technology, has been complex and multi-layering, so its developing process contributes to compose the main structure. Information has been changed its media form from the letter in newspaper to image in machine ‘TV’, and it has been globalized through using internet.
To construct it in the real social landscape, it has to reflect a real situation. Currently, the local TV stations are in danger of becoming obsolete by the huge international broadcast companies, such as CNN and BBC. The local TV stations could reduce their expenses by simplifying the transmission system of broadcasting to connecting to the internet network. Therefore, it will be an effective solution for local TV stations to be in globalized new coffee house.

globalized coffee & information technology
the current situation of globalized coffee, internet network, and international TV stations.
The current coffee house is globalized, and the information technology is also globalized such as internet network, and international TV stations. Therefore, the new coffee house for information technology could exist in the relationship between internet network and TV stations.

Main system of coffee house
Time based coffee house
Form of time based coffee house
The form of time based coffee house is drawn by 3d-modeling. It is a basic form of the new coffee house, and it will be re-organized by main system, because it is just described coffee history. To re-interpret the coffee house, based on the original form in the early modern, it is necessary to build the main system.

Coffee history2
Figure 1. coffee history
It is time base drawing about coffee history. In the drawing, time flows from down to up, and coffee culture has been huge and diversify, as a result, place for coffee is not limited in a building, and go into everywhere in our life.
On the other hand, coffee house was developed and formed its structure, in the early modern period, and it later was disintegrated and simplified. As a result, the coffee house occupies in a part of the huge coffee culture, even though it produced the coffee culture in the past.

Strategy
How… to make the interacting architecture
To make the interacting architecture, the old coffee house must be re-interpreted in the real social landscape. The current coffee house has been globalized by the incredible growing of coffee culture, and its relationship with society has been different from the early modern society. Since the original form of the coffee house could not be continuous, there are very few social events from the past. However it is still continued to the place for the news. People have used the coffee house for newspaper in the past, and for internet in the present. It means that the current coffee house could be re-interpreted as the place for information.
To do this, the main system, the aggregator of information, is necessary. The old coffee house was enough activated to be marked as ‘the place for news’ in the hundreds year-old map, in other worlds, coffee house was the place for publishing newspaper as the origin of newspaper office. Therefore the main system about information can be built by the developing process of information technology from newspaper, in the coffee house, to TV broadcast or internet network.
My project was going to be categorized into the three parts.
Invisible frame work
It is to embody the background of coffee and coffee house in architectural drawings.
- history of coffee and coffee house
- giving information system in the coffee house
- process of coffee spreads and coffee plantations
- current situations of globalized coffee house and information technology
Physical frame work
It is about how it could be re-constructed in the real social landscape.
- building the main structure of new coffee house.
- finding the site
Collage
It is also about how to be realized, and two frame works will be collaged in the site.

revolution of the black water, coffee
The powerful, but transitory Revolution of the Black water, coffee
Today, coffee, which has similar name in countries all over the world, is the second largest products following oil. However it is a noticeable thing that coffee emitted the more powerful energy to the society in anther period, around the 17th and the 18th century.
‘Coffee and the culture of coffee’ was a religious idea of Islam and was introduced to the people through the house of coffee in the Middle East. It later traveled to the European continent. Finally, it was placed in the coffee house, which functioned as the foundation of the early modern society. It joined the banner of ‘Liberty’, Equality’, and ‘Fraternity’ at the translated form of Café in France, and it intervened in the policy of the imperialism of Europe, such as monoculture by the colonialism and slaver trade, moreover it yielded the Fascism in Germany.
Unfortunately the energetic relationship between coffee house and social landscape has declined and simplified. As a result, the current coffee house, like ‘Starbucks’, has very few remains for the old coffee house.
Organic coffee house to interact with social landscape
The coffee house in the early modern society was booming in England. The English coffee house was incredibly popular, and it provided a place for the modern society to grow, in other words, it had an organic relationship with social and cultural landscape of England. Although it has disappeared, the English coffee house still has value to show the way forward to interaction between architecture and the future landscape.
I want to represent the English coffee house to be the new organic building, which accept the new needs of the society; which interact with the changing social landscape.

brief of essay- sustainable interacted architecture
What… Architecture for the sustainable interaction with changing environment
Environment, which we live in, is changing continuously, due to many factors, such as global warming, flourish and decline of a civilization, development of science, and so on. Sometimes conditions exist for a long time, and sometimes conditions disappear in short time, therefore, architecture has made our living space in the changing environment. Architecture ought to accept these changes and adjust to the new function, like water, which adapts itself to surroundings, in other words, architecture has to keep its relationship with changing social landscape. That might be a way to have the value to exist continuously. I will design the architecture for the sustainable interaction with changing environment. It will be a meaningful work in London, which is filled with old architectures which have interacted with people over hundreds years.
Coffee house was architecture to be built by relationship between coffee and society and it had great effects on building the early modern society, so the energetic interaction between coffee house and social landscape, in the 17th and the 18th century, could be a good starting point.
Why… Formless of Water, Interaction of the River Thames, and English coffee house
Formless, the interaction of the water with the near landscape
The last term was spent on researching about water. Water not only contains everything in the world, but also does not have any other substance. Due to its ambiguous characteristics, the water has become the abject of many philosopher’s attention. One of interesting characteristics is ‘FORMLESS’. Water makes its form by its surroundings. It means that water changes shape whenever the environment changes. There were three ways to define of water’s shape.
- The shape is made by reaction with surrounding elements, such as ripple by wind and a boundary of river or reservoir by topography.
- The shape is formed by representing inner energy of itself. For example, drop water makes its shape by the falling height and the weight of the drop. Therefore the interaction between the kinetic and potential energy of the drop of water and condition of the floor, makes the form.
- Lastly, the interaction between two characteristics of water, as mentioned above, makes its form when the drop of water falls onto the surface of water.
For handling the gradual changing of the environment, the design of architecture needs to accept lasting changes, by using the third way. Interaction with surrounding environment and the inner energy of water can help to find the way that architecture not only adapts itself to the changes, but accepts the changing needs of new society

The artificial boundary of the River Thames, interaction of the river and cityscape
River Thames is one of the rivers, which accommodate a variety of changes in landscape and in society. The level of the river is affected easily by changing landscape and the river has changed its boundary due to many artificial facilities for ports and docks. In detail, firstly, the river’s topographical environment has changed by sea level and an ocean current, so the River Thames adapts the change, and forms its shape through changing water level or flooding. Secondly, the change of social environment also influences the river’s boundary. England expanded its naval power and world trade in the 11th century, and River Thames was the main place of world trade. Although power of world trade was declined after the 19th century, the facilities, such as docks, ports, and barriers, remained and were redeveloped, making an artificial boundary of the river. The shape of the River Thames has changed by accepting the changing landscape for shipping trade and preventing flood.
English coffee house, the event from the interaction of the river
Interaction of the River Thames and social landscape, had remarkable effect on not only forming boundary of the river, but also changing society. English coffee house is the architecture to alongside the flourishing and declining of world trade in River Thames. It was the society beyond the architecture. In the 17th century, there were a large number of foreigners who moved to East England as international trade developed. Coffee was introduced naturally to the English. The coffee house had a great effect on policy, society, culture, and science of England since it opened in 1650. It provided a gathering place to exchange news and gossip and conduct business. Many coffee houses were grouped around the royal exchange, custom houses, post-houses and the court itself. Sometimes it was a place for education, as a penny university, and a place for a doctor’s office. Although it disappeared in the 19th century, it is apparent that the English coffee house was a good example to show the energetic interaction with social landscape.
