brief of essay- sustainable interacted architecture

What… Architecture for the sustainable interaction with changing environment
Environment, which we live in, is changing continuously, due to many factors, such as global warming, flourish and decline of a civilization, development of science, and so on. Sometimes conditions exist for a long time, and sometimes conditions disappear in short time, therefore, architecture has made our living space in the changing environment. Architecture ought to accept these changes and adjust to the new function, like water, which adapts itself to surroundings, in other words, architecture has to keep its relationship with changing social landscape. That might be a way to have the value to exist continuously. I will design the architecture for the sustainable interaction with changing environment. It will be a meaningful work in London, which is filled with old architectures which have interacted with people over hundreds years.
Coffee house was architecture to be built by relationship between coffee and society and it had great effects on building the early modern society, so the energetic interaction between coffee house and social landscape, in the 17th and the 18th century, could be a good starting point.

Why… Formless of Water, Interaction of the River Thames, and English coffee house

Formless, the interaction of the water with the near landscape
The last term was spent on researching about water. Water not only contains everything in the world, but also does not have any other substance. Due to its ambiguous characteristics, the water has become the abject of many philosopher’s attention. One of interesting characteristics is ‘FORMLESS’. Water makes its form by its surroundings. It means that water changes shape whenever the environment changes. There were three ways to define of water’s shape.
- The shape is made by reaction with surrounding elements, such as ripple by wind and a boundary of river or reservoir by topography.
- The shape is formed by representing inner energy of itself. For example, drop water makes its shape by the falling height and the weight of the drop. Therefore the interaction between the kinetic and potential energy of the drop of water and condition of the floor, makes the form.
- Lastly, the interaction between two characteristics of water, as mentioned above, makes its form when the drop of water falls onto the surface of water.
For handling the gradual changing of the environment, the design of architecture needs to accept lasting changes, by using the third way. Interaction with surrounding environment and the inner energy of water can help to find the way that architecture not only adapts itself to the changes, but accepts the changing needs of new society

The artificial boundary of the River Thames, interaction of the river and cityscape

River Thames is one of the rivers, which accommodate a variety of changes in landscape and in society. The level of the river is affected easily by changing landscape and the river has changed its boundary due to many artificial facilities for ports and docks. In detail, firstly, the river’s topographical environment has changed by sea level and an ocean current, so the River Thames adapts the change, and forms its shape through changing water level or flooding. Secondly, the change of social environment also influences the river’s boundary. England expanded its naval power and world trade in the 11th century, and River Thames was the main place of world trade. Although power of world trade was declined after the 19th century, the facilities, such as docks, ports, and barriers, remained and were redeveloped, making an artificial boundary of the river. The shape of the River Thames has changed by accepting the changing landscape for shipping trade and preventing flood.

English coffee house, the event from the interaction of the river
Interaction of the River Thames and social landscape, had remarkable effect on not only forming boundary of the river, but also changing society. English coffee house is the architecture to alongside the flourishing and declining of world trade in River Thames. It was the society beyond the architecture. In the 17th century, there were a large number of foreigners who moved to East England as international trade developed. Coffee was introduced naturally to the English. The coffee house had a great effect on policy, society, culture, and science of England since it opened in 1650. It provided a gathering place to exchange news and gossip and conduct business. Many coffee houses were grouped around the royal exchange, custom houses, post-houses and the court itself. Sometimes it was a place for education, as a penny university, and a place for a doctor’s office. Although it disappeared in the 19th century, it is apparent that the English coffee house was a good example to show the energetic interaction with social landscape.

Tottenham hale... the first site

The first site.

I had to find hidden system in the site. There were intersections of waterway, road, ans rial way in Tottenhamhale. I saw movings which have different speed, such as car, train, and water.
